Psychedelic Drugs for Addiction Treatment: Past, Present and Future

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a significant global health challenge. This presentation explores the potential of psychedelic substances—psilocybin, LSD, ketamine, MDMA, and ibogaine—for treating SUDs. While evidence is emerging, these treatments remain less studied compared to conditions like depression or PTSD. I will review the evidence on their therapeutic potential, safety, and clinical applications, highlighting both limitations and risks. Drawing on historical context and current research, I will address key challenges and future directions, emphasizing the importance of rigorous studies to advance this field and better understand the role of psychedelics in addressing addiction, one of today’s pressing health issues.
