ENTERTAINMENTS

Saturday Night at the Lemon Grove

GET ON DOWN

Breaking Convention is many things, more than just an academic conference.  Not satisfied with dissolving ourselves in the latest academic developments and artistic works, we like to round the conference with evening entertainments to celebrate psychedelics as an integrative, versatile and diverse paradigm.  We have featured names such as Cold Cut, Mixmaster Morris, Youth, DJ Food, Gnod Soccer96, Nik Turner's Space Ritual, Andy Votel and The Oscillation and many more to help us with this in the past.

Alex Downey
Breaking Convention Resident DJ: Alex Downey
There’s only a handful of DJ’s I’ve ever heard who are naturally gifted and Alex Downey is one of them,” says techno don Ben Sims at whose Split/Balance nights Downey has regularly played.

Based in Brighton, Alex fell in love with Techno from seeing the likes of Derrick May and Dave Clarke at the Zap Club in the early nineties, and his regular pilgrimages to London’s Lost parties were an inspiration, where Jeff Mills became a massive influence on his musical perspective.

Alex Downey has been an ardent supporter of quality underground music and a prominent purveyor of all things electronic as a DJ, vinyl pusher, and radio presenter for three decades and counting. Alex was a key figure behind the counter at Brighton's legendary Covert Records and has amassed an immense record collection spanning the house, techno and electro spectrum, while his unrestricted sets behind the decks have earned him much respect and a great reputation amongst the global electronic community.

He’s the high priest at his latest business venture; ‘The Temple of Vinyl’, a monumental warehouse stocked floor to ceiling with the black gold, whilst his broad taste and consummate selection skills can be heard on his monthly ‘Voyage De Lux’ radio shows, on Brighton’s 1BTN.FM.

He has performed on iconic stages such as at the legendary ‘Labyrinth’ Festival in Japan, London’s ‘Fabric’ nightclub, and Birmingham’s ‘Atomic Jam’ amongst many more, has been a resident DJ at the highly respected ‘Freerotation’ festival since its inception, and in more recent years has been well received at ‘Houghton’ festival and international festivals ‘Waking Life’ and ‘Ion’.  Alex Downey is the resident Breaking Convention DJ.  Check out his Breaking Convention 2017 mix and Breaking Convention 2019 mix.

As a result Interbeing creates music for other species, liminal spaces, architectural structures, landscapes and humans. From sound experiments in sacred spaces (most recently in the great pyramid of Egypt) to sound conversations (dialogos) at the key chakra points of the Earth. Expect an array of beats that emulates living inside a nested ecology with all species through sound.

Clandestina
Clandestina
She likes it deep, smooth and unpredictable, emotional, dirty, tribal and lyrical! Clandestina, born in Florence, Tuscany, currently living in South Portugal, has been collecting music since early age.  She starts djing in the Chill Out stages of Psytrance Festivals, to then move to more upbeat sounds, exploring all those sonorities that allow people of different ages and "scenes" to dance in unison to a timeless, yet extremely contemporary, beat.  Tunes with a compelling groove, instruments and lyrics from all over the world, a crescendo of tempo with an irresistible bass, all conspires to create the kind of vibe that is not easy to cathegorize and impossible to let go...
La Plastique
La Plastique
Emerging from the scene of underground electro-techno parties, La Plastique is an eclectic dj and selector. Part of the producer’s duo Jean & La Plastique, they have been performing since 2008 when they started throwing illegal parties in abandoned stables in Rimini.
